Articles: A, An, and The — Complete Guide

Three tiny words cause more mistakes than any tense. The system is learnable: a/an introduces something new or general; the points at something specific that both speaker and listener know.

A and an — introducing and generalising

Use a/an with singular countable nouns when it's one of many, or mentioned for the first time: "I saw a dog." / "She's an engineer" (jobs always take a/an).

A before consonant sounds, an before vowel sounds — sounds, not letters: an hour (silent h), a university ("yoo" sound), an MBA ("em" sound).

The — pointing at the known one

Use the when both people know which one: second mentions ("I saw a dog. The dog was huge."), one-of-a-kind things (the sun, the internet, the CN Tower), superlatives (the best, the first), and shared context ("Can you close the door?" — we both know which door).

No article — the zero article

Use no article for plurals and uncountables in general statements: "Dogs are loyal." / "Coffee keeps me awake." / "Life is short."

Also with most proper nouns (Canada, Tokyo, Maria), meals (have breakfast), languages (speak Japanese), and common patterns: go to bed / school / work, at home, by car.

Exceptions that take the: countries with plural or descriptive names (the Netherlands, the United States, the UK), rivers, seas and oceans (the Nile, the Pacific), mountain ranges (the Alps), and families (the Smiths).
